Hunger Strike Concluded Following Government Dialogue

Sonam Wangchuk, a prominent social activist and advocate for educational reforms, has concluded his 26-day hunger strike. The decision came after extensive discussions on Friday with Union Health and Family Welfare Minister JP Nadda and Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, who provided positive assurances regarding student-related issues.

Assurances Given on Student Cases

In an official statement, Wangchuk announced the end of his fast in the presence of the Union Ministers, senior representatives from Leh-Ladakh's Apex Body, and other leaders. He described the dialogue as constructive, highlighting the government's sensitivity towards issues concerning students.

A written assurance was provided by the government stating that cases registered against students during protests would be reviewed. Proceedings would be initiated to withdraw these cases for students found not to be involved in any violent activities. This assurance is considered a primary reason for ending the fast.

Prime Minister's Concern and Hospitalization

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had previously expressed concern over Sonam Wangchuk's health. Through his ministers, the Prime Minister urged Wangchuk to follow medical advice and return to his normal routine soon.

Due to a deterioration in his health during the hunger strike, Sonam Wangchuk was admitted to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. Union Ministers JP Nadda and Dr. Jitendra Singh met him there and, after a lengthy discussion, offered him juice to break his fast. It is noteworthy that Wangchuk had begun his indefinite hunger strike 26 days prior, highlighting issues concerning students and various public interest matters in Ladakh. Social organizations, students, and environmental activists from across the country had voiced their support for his movement.

Focus Shifts to Future Negotiations and Implementation

With the hunger strike concluded, attention now turns to further negotiations between the government and Wangchuk's representatives, and the implementation of the written assurances provided. Wangchuk has expressed his hope that the government will maintain the spirit of dialogue and fulfill the promises made in a timely manner.
