Sitting for More Than 8 Hours a Day Raises Heart Risk Even If You Exercise, New Global Study Warns

A new international health study has delivered a worrying message for office-goers and remote workers: long sitting hours can damage heart health even if you exercise regularly.

Researchers analysing data from over 1 million adults found that people who sit for more than 8 hours a day have a significantly higher risk of heart disease, diabetes, and early death — regardless of whether they meet daily exercise targets.

Why exercise alone is not enough

Doctors explain that prolonged sitting slows blood circulation, increases insulin resistance, and raises inflammation levels. A 30-minute workout cannot fully reverse the metabolic damage caused by sitting for long, uninterrupted periods.

What experts recommend now

Stand up every 30–45 minutes

Take 2–5 minute movement breaks

Use stairs, stretch, or walk during calls

Health authorities say “movement throughout the day” matters more than one intense workout.
