Cricket fans in Siliguri and North Bengal have a big reason to celebrate โ West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced that the city will soon get its own cricket stadium named after Indian womenโs team star Richa Ghosh.
Speaking at a function in Uttarkanya, Mamata said,
โWe have decided to build a cricket stadium in Siliguri. It will be named after Richa Ghosh.โ
The stadium will be constructed on 27 acres of land in Chandmoni, near the Uttarayon township, with Siliguri Mayor Gautam Deb overseeing the project.
๐ Honouring a Local Hero
Richa, the wicketkeeper-batter who played a key role in Indiaโs historic ICC Womenโs World Cup win on November 2, has already been felicitated by both the state government and the Cricket Association of Bengal. Mamata said the new stadium would inspire future generations:
โWe want people to remember Richaโs achievements and draw inspiration from her success.โ
๐ธ Long-Awaited Dream for Siliguri
For decades, local cricketers have struggled due to the lack of a professional cricket venue. The upcoming stadium finally fulfills that dream. Siliguri has also produced players like Wriddhiman Saha, who made it big despite limited facilities.
๐๏ธ Local Joy & Reactions
Kuntal Goswami, general secretary of the Siliguri Mahakuma Krira Parishad, said,
โIt seems the dream of a cricket stadium here is finally going to be fulfilled.โ
Wriddhimanโs former coach Jayanta Bhowmik added,
โThis is a proud moment. I hope the stadium is built soon so more cricketers like Richa and Wriddhi can emerge from Siliguri.โ

Mamata also announced 14 new health centres and 15 crรจches in tea estates and promised 10 new school buses for children in the region.
