India vice-captain Shubman Gill is expected to miss the fourth Twenty20 International against South Africa on Wednesday night in Lucknow due to a foot injury sustained during a nets session on Tuesday.
Gill’s absence could pave the way for Sanju Samson to open the innings. Samson last featured in a T20I in October this year against Australia in Melbourne.
The injury comes at an inopportune time for Gill, who has struggled for form in the ongoing series. After scoring just 4 and 0 in the first two matches, he managed a run-a-ball 28 in the third T20I. Known for his reliability, the team will feel the gap in his absence.
Gill has also been sidelined recently due to a neck injury, missing both Test and ODI series, with his absence particularly felt in the Tests, which India lost 0-2.
The toss for the Lucknow match has been delayed due to dense fog, and India skipper Suryakumar Yadav is expected to provide an update on Gill’s fitness ahead of the game.
