Shreyas Iyer’s Family Joins Him in Sydney as Cricketer Recovers from Rare Spleen Injury

Sydney — Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer continues to recover in Sydney after sustaining a ruptured spleen and rib cage injury during the third ODI against Australia last Saturday. His family, including sister Shresta Iyer, arrived in Sydney on Wednesday to be by his side.

The 30-year-old was injured while attempting a difficult running catch to dismiss Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling. He was rushed to hospital, where doctors discovered internal bleeding caused by a blunt abdominal impact.

In his first statement since the incident, Iyer said:

“I’m currently in the recovery process and getting better every passing day. I’m deeply grateful for all the kind wishes and support I’ve received.”

India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav described the injury as “rare,” adding that “rare things happen to rare talent,” and expressed confidence in Iyer’s comeback.

According to a BCCI medical update, a repeat scan on October 28 showed “significant improvement” in Iyer’s condition. “The injury was promptly identified, and the bleeding was immediately arrested. His condition is now stable and continues to be monitored by specialists in Sydney and India,” the statement said.

Astrologer Greenstone Lobo also remarked that Iyer was “lucky” to have avoided a more serious outcome and predicted a strong return to cricket once fully recovered.
