Shane Watson Joins Kolkata Knight Riders as Assistant Coach Ahead of IPL 2026

Former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson has been appointed as the assistant coach of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ahead of the IPL 2026 season.

Watson, who earlier served as an assistant coach with Delhi Capitals under Ricky Ponting, returns to the IPL coaching circuit after three years. He will work alongside Abhishek Nayar, who recently took over as KKR’s new head coach, while Dwayne Bravo continues as team mentor.

A two-time World Cup winner (2007, 2015) and one of Australia’s most decorated T20 players, the 44-year-old brings vast experience to the KKR setup. Watson’s illustrious IPL career includes 145 matches, four centuries, and key title-winning performances with Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings.

KKR CEO Venky Mysore welcomed the move, saying Watson’s “world-class T20 understanding and leadership” will add immense value to the franchise’s culture and preparation.

Expressing his excitement, Watson said, “It’s an honour to be part of such an iconic franchise. I’ve always admired KKR’s passionate fans and their commitment to excellence. I’m eager to help bring another title to Kolkata.”

With Watson’s addition, KKR aims to strengthen its strategic core as it builds momentum for IPL 2026.
