As fans absorbed the news, KKR co-owner Shah Rukh Khan shared a heartfelt message celebrating Russell’s legacy and welcoming him into his new chapter with the franchise.

Shortly after Russell posted a video on Sunday confirming his retirement as an IPL player, Shah Rukh Khan responded with an emotional note on social media.

Recognising Russell’s evolution into his new job within the team, SRK added:

In his announcement video, Russell revealed that he had held several discussions with KKR CEO Venky Mysore and Shah Rukh Khan before deciding to step away from active play.

Though KKR released him ahead of the 2026 mini-auction following a dip in form, Russell remains one of the most destructive and influential players in IPL history — a match-winner known for his explosive batting and critical breakthroughs with the ball.

His move into a “power coach” role signals KKR’s intent to retain his presence, experience, and trademark aggression within the dressing room.

KKR and SRK’s Long Association

Shah Rukh Khan has co-owned the Kolkata Knight Riders since the franchise’s inception in 2008, alongside Juhi Chawla’s husband Jay Mehta. Russell has been one of the team’s most iconic faces, especially during their strong campaigns in the mid and late 2010s.
