Sensex Slides Over 500 Points Amid Foreign Outflows, Weak Rupee, and Global Cues

The Indian stock market faced a sharp correction on Tuesday, with the Sensex tumbling 533.50 points to settle at 84,679.86, while the Nifty 50 dropped 167.20 points to 25,860.10. Market sentiment was weighed down by persistent foreign fund outflows, a weakening rupee, and sluggish global market trends.

Key Movers

Among Sensex constituents, Axis Bank led the losses, plunging 5.03%, followed by Eternal, HCL Tech, Bajaj Finserv, Tata Steel, UltraTech Cement, and Bajaj Finance. On the upside, Titan, Bharti Airtel, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Asian Paints registered gains.

Global Market Pressure

Asian markets mirrored the weakness seen in India:

  • South Korea KOSPI, Japan Nikkei 225, Shanghai Composite, and Hong Kong Hang Seng ended sharply lower.

European markets traded mixed, while U.S. indices had closed in negative territory on Monday (December 15, 2025).

Foreign and Domestic Flows

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers, offloading ₹1,468.32 crore on Monday, while Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) bought stocks worth ₹1,792.25 crore, partially cushioning the decline.

Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments, said, “Continued INR weakness to fresh record lows, driven by persistent FII outflows and subdued global sentiments, dragged domestic markets into negative territory.

Commodities and Currency

  • Brent crude declined 1.54%, trading at $59.63 per barrel.

  • The Indian rupee also remained under pressure, contributing to the bearish mood.

Market Context

The sharp fall follows a modest decline on Monday, when Sensex eased 54.30 points to 85,213.36 and Nifty slipped 19.65 points to 26,027.30, reflecting mounting external pressures and domestic currency volatility.
