Tragic Incident on Independence Day
A heart-wrenching event unfolded in the Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh on the joyous occasion of the 80th Independence Day. At Al Hasnain Public School in Madala Fatehpur village, under the Asmoli police station area, a verandah constructed at the school's main gate suddenly collapsed during the flag-hoisting ceremony.
The devastating accident resulted in the tragic death of an 8-year-old student, Nizamam, while two other children, 11-year-old Saif Ali and 10-year-old Shaidana, sustained injuries. The incident transformed the celebratory atmosphere of Independence Day into one of mourning, causing panic within the school premises.
Children's Performances Lead to Mishap
The unfortunate event occurred when cultural programs were underway after the flag-hoisting ceremony. The event was attended by a large number of students, their parents, and local villagers. Children's performances were in progress, and the audience was watching with great enthusiasm.
According to received information, some children, while enjoying the cultural program, had climbed onto the iron verandah built at the school's main entrance. It is estimated that the excessive number of children on the verandah led to an undue burden, causing a section of the structure to suddenly break and fall.
Rescue Efforts and Medical Treatment
The sudden accident triggered screams at the venue. As the verandah collapsed, three children were trapped under the debris. Immediately after the incident, villagers and others present initiated immediate relief and rescue operations. After considerable effort, all three children buried under the debris were extricated.
They were rushed to the nearest hospital for immediate medical attention. After thorough examination, doctors declared the 8-year-old Nizamam dead, while treatment for the other two injured children is ongoing. The news of Nizamam's death plunged his family into profound grief. The place where the nation's flag was hoisted just a few hours earlier, celebrating the country's Independence Day, was now submerged in sorrow.
Administrative Response and Investigation
Upon receiving information, local police and administrative officials swiftly reached the spot. SDM Vikas Chandra, CO Asmoli Aman Singh, and Station House Officer Sudhir Panwar conducted a thorough inspection of the scene and oversaw the relief and rescue efforts. Later, District Magistrate Ankit Khandelwal, Superintendent of Police Krishna Kumar Bishnoi, and Basic Education Officer Alka Sharma also visited the site.
The officials not only gathered detailed information about the circumstances of the incident but also met with the bereaved family of the deceased student, expressing their condolences and assuring all possible assistance. The preliminary investigation by the administration revealed that Al Hasnain Public School is a primary-level institution.
Structural Integrity Under Scrutiny
Officials stated that some children had climbed onto the verandah to watch the program, and their large number increased the load on the structure, causing it to break. According to the Superintendent of Police, the school building is reported to be approximately 19 to 20 years old. However, it remains unclear whether the accident was solely due to the additional load on the verandah, or if factors such as the quality of construction, lack of maintenance, or structural weakness also contributed.
All these aspects are being thoroughly investigated. The administration has taken this incident very seriously and has launched a comprehensive inquiry into the causes of the matter. The scope of the investigation includes critical aspects such as the current condition of the school building, the structural integrity of the verandah, and the safety measures adopted during the program.
Questions Raised on Safety Standards
While the entire nation was immersed in patriotism and jubilation on the 79th Independence Day, this incident in Sambhal has permanently stolen the happiness of one family. This accident has once again raised serious questions about child safety and the structural safety standards of public buildings like schools.
It will only become clear after the administrative investigation is complete which factors were responsible for this tragic accident and whether any negligence occurred at any level. Currently, police and administrative teams are engaged in investigating the incident, and all possible assistance is being provided to the affected family.
