Sanitation Workers Present Key Demands to Municipal Chief

Guna, August 13, 2026 - Sanitation workers of the Guna Municipality have submitted a memorandum to the Chief Municipal Officer (CMO), Shailendra Awasthi, outlining four major demands. Led by Karan Malviya, the District President of the Madhya Pradesh Maha Valmiki Panchayat, the workers presented their case after conducting a signature campaign.

The workers highlighted issues including regularization, timely salary payments, new recruitments, and compassionate appointments for the dependents of deceased employees. The memorandum specifically urged the immediate regularization of contractual sanitation workers, who have been employed for over a decade on nominal wages, enabling them to support their families with dignity.

Improving Service Conditions and Financial Security

Furthermore, employees requested that their salaries be disbursed regularly by the 2nd or 3rd of every month. This timely payment would allow them to meet financial obligations such as school fees and loan installments promptly.

Among other significant demands is the recruitment of new sanitation staff to address the growing population and ensure effective city cleanliness. The organization argues that the current workforce may be insufficient for the city's sanitation needs.

Compassionate Appointments and Official Response

The fourth demand calls for compassionate appointments for the dependents of daily wage and regularized employees who have passed away. CM Shailendra Awasthi listened carefully to the workers' concerns and assured them that these issues would be discussed at a higher level according to government regulations and appropriate action would be taken.

Several community members and employees from the Valmiki society, including State Minister Jagram Dhuriya, Divisional Vice President Ashok Cheetaliya, and District Acting President Arjun Dhuriya, were present during the memorandum submission.

Background on Contractual Employee Demands in Madhya Pradesh

Demands for the regularization of contractual employees have been ongoing in Madhya Pradesh. In July 2023, the state government announced benefits for contractual employees equivalent to regular staff, including pension, health insurance, and gratuity. Various issues concerning the wages and service conditions of sanitation workers have surfaced periodically in Madhya Pradesh, with some instances of strikes over pending salary payments.

In 2013, the Madhya Pradesh government also established a 'Sanitation Worker Commission' to address the problems faced by these workers, underscoring the historical significance of their issues.
