Sanitation Workers Issue Strike Warning Over Unmet Demands

The All India Sanitation Mazdoor Congress Trade Union has once again sounded the bugle for protest, demanding the fulfillment of their long-pending 16-point charter. Union officials and a large number of sanitation employees gathered at the Guna Collectorate to submit a detailed memorandum to the district administration, addressed to the state's Chief Minister.

The employees issued a clear warning: if their demands are not considered sympathetically and concrete decisions are not taken in a timely manner, an indefinite work stoppage strike will be initiated across the state. The government and administration will be held responsible for any disruptions that arise from such a situation.

Key Demands Presented

Among the primary demands of the sanitation employees is the regularization of daily wage earners, muster roll workers, outsourced staff, and regulated employees working in urban local bodies. Additionally, they are demanding a minimum monthly salary of ₹25,000.

The memorandum also prominently highlights the demand for the complete eradication of the contract system prevalent in urban bodies and for direct recruitment to fill vacant positions. Employees are also strongly advocating for the reinstatement of the old pension scheme, which was discontinued after 2005.

Other Significant Demands

Other important demands put forth by the employees include an exemption from the mobile face attendance system for illiterate sanitation workers in the fourth grade. Furthermore, a proposal has been made to offer voluntary retirement on medical grounds to employees who have completed 50 years of age, with the benefit of compassionate appointment for their dependents.

The memorandum also includes the demand for timely deposit of amounts deducted as GPF, PF, and NPS contributions into the accounts of employees working in local bodies. The timely allocation of the 'Chungi Kshatipurti' (octroi compensation) amount for salary payments and the abolition of the roster system have also been emphasized.

New Positions and Development Corporation Demand

Citing an announcement made during the tenure of the Babulal Gaur government, the employees are demanding direct recruitment for one lakh new positions based on the current population. Prominently raised is also the demand for the abolition of the State Sanitation Kamgar Aayog (State Sanitation Workers Commission) and the establishment of a separate development corporation in its place.
