Samsung Electronics' latest Galaxy Z Fold8 foldable smartphone is experiencing a surge in popularity, significantly drawing in younger demographics and even Apple iPhone loyalists. The device's notably thinner and lighter "passport-size" design is credited with its unprecedented success, leading to record preorders and a notable shift in consumer preference.

The Galaxy Z Fold8 has achieved record-breaking domestic preorders, reaching 1.44 million units, marking the highest ever for a Galaxy device. Globally, cumulative sales have now surpassed 5 million units. Analysis of preorder customers on Samsung.com reveals that half were within the teens, 20s, or 30s age bracket. Within this younger demographic, purchases by women more than doubled compared to the previous foldable model.

New Design Appeals to a Younger Demographic

An industry source highlighted the significance of this trend, noting that 67 percent of Korean women in their 20s currently use iPhones. The substantial increase in purchases among women aged teens through 30s represents a notable win for Samsung in a market segment traditionally dominated by Apple. This suggests the Fold8's aesthetic and functionality are resonating particularly well with this group.

The appeal of the Z Fold8 was evident at a Samsung store in Seoul's Mapo District. Three teenage girls were observed immediately interacting with the device upon entering, enthusiastically folding and unfolding it while taking selfies. They expressed a strong desire to own the phone, with one exclaiming, "This is it!"

iPhone Users Embrace Foldable Technology

The shift extends to established iPhone users who are now contemplating or have already made the switch. Social media commentary indicates a perception that the iPhone now feels outdated, with one user noting, "The iPhone feels like a dad phone now." Another long-time Apple devotee shared, "A 10-year Apple devotee is saying goodbye through tears," illustrating the emotional impact of the transition.

Jeong Da-um, a 26-year-old who switched from an iPhone 17 Pro to the Fold8, shared her experience on Instagram. She described falling in love with the device upon seeing it in person due to its attractive appearance. Her unboxing review further details her positive experience with the new foldable.

Another user, Jeong Seo-hee, 22, stated that she had intended to switch to an iPhone but changed her mind after trying the Z Fold8. She cited the device's lightweight feel and the appealing aesthetic of its photos as key factors in her decision.
