A city under pressure in freezing temperatures

On day 1,416 of the Russia-Ukraine war, Kyiv faced one of its most disruptive attacks this winter, with Russian strikes beginning late Thursday night and continuing into Friday. Ukrainian emergency authorities confirmed that the death toll rose to four, while 25 people were wounded, including five rescue workers responding to the damage.

The assault severely hit critical infrastructure, leaving large parts of the capital without essential services just as temperatures dropped to minus 10 degrees Celsius. City officials warned that the cold sharply increased risks for residents, especially children and the elderly.

Heating systems crippled across Kyiv

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the strikes damaged systems supplying heat and utilities to residential areas. According to city assessments, nearly half of Kyiv’s apartment buildings, about 6,000 blocks, were left without heating.

City authorities urged residents who can do so to temporarily leave Kyiv, stressing that repairs would take time and that prolonged exposure to cold homes could threaten lives.

Emergency crews worked through the night to restore power and water where possible, but officials cautioned that full repairs depend on security conditions.

Hospital shelled in southern Ukraine

In the southern city of Kherson, Russian shelling struck a hospital shortly after midday on Friday, regional prosecutors said. The attack damaged the intensive care unit and injured three nurses aged 21, 49, and 52, all of whom were inside the facility at the time.

Local authorities said the hospital continued operating under emergency conditions while assessing structural damage and relocating patients where needed.

Global health alarm over medical attacks

The World Health Organization strongly condemned the continued targeting of healthcare facilities. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said verified reports show nine attacks on healthcare in Ukraine since the start of 2026, resulting in two deaths and injuries to 11 people, including medical staff and patients.

The WHO reiterated that attacks on medical facilities violate international humanitarian law and warned that repeated strikes weaken Ukraine’s ability to care for civilians and war casualties alike.
