The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) should not be viewed as a paramilitary organisation nor understood through the prism of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat said on Friday in Bhopal. He stressed that such interpretations fundamentally misunderstand the Sangh’s purpose and functioning.

Addressing a closed-door interaction with prominent citizens and professionals, Bhagwat said the RSS exists to strengthen social unity and national character, not to exercise political power or function like a military force.

“Uniform does not mean militarisation”

Bhagwat explained that the RSS uniform and physical training sessions are often misread as signs of militarisation. According to him, these practices are meant to instill discipline, cooperation, and readiness to serve society, not to prepare for combat or enforcement.

He underlined that the RSS has no role in law enforcement, internal security, or armed activity, distancing the organisation from comparisons with paramilitary forces.
