Rohit Sharma Becomes World No. 1 ODI Batter for the First Time in ICC Rankings

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has reached a new career milestone, becoming the No. 1 ranked batter in the ICC Men’s ODI Rankings for the very first time.

Rohit climbed two spots to the top following his unbeaten century in India’s series-clinching nine-wicket win against Australia in Sydney — a performance that underlined his class and consistency. The 38-year-old struck 13 fours and three sixes en route to his 33rd ODI century, sharing a dominant 189-run stand with Virat Kohli (74)* to seal India’s victory in style.

With this achievement, Rohit surpassed Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran and fellow Indian Shubman Gill to claim the No. 1 ranking, capping off a decade-long run inside the top 10.

Axar Patel Makes Double Gains

Rohit wasn’t the only Indian to move up. Axar Patel has climbed the rankings following his all-round performance in Sydney. The left-arm spinner moved up six places to 31st among ODI bowlers and rose four spots to eighth on the all-rounders’ list, led by Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan and Azmatullah Omarzai, respectively.

Other Movers in ICC Rankings

Among other players:

  • Mitchell Santner (New Zealand) jumped three places to fourth among ODI bowlers.

  • Josh Hazlewood (Australia) rose two positions to eighth.

  • Harry Brook (England) climbed 23 spots to reach 25th in ODI batting rankings.

Test and T20I Rankings: South Africa Shine

In the Test arena, South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj surged nine places to a career-best 13th after his nine-wicket match haul against Pakistan in Rawalpindi. Fellow spinner Simon Harmer rose 26 spots to 45th.

Among batters, Aiden Markram moved up to 15th, while Tony de Zorzi jumped to 47th. Pakistan captain Shan Masood gained five places to reach 42nd.

In T20Is, South Africa pacer Corbin Bosch leapt 40 places to 53rd, while Pakistan’s Mohammad Nawaz rose to sixth among all-rounders. Rising star Saim Ayub also advanced five positions to 49th among T20I batters.
