Australian batsman Matt Renshaw has etched his name in the record books, surpassing a decade-old benchmark set by Indian star Virat Kohli. Renshaw amassed 190 runs against South Africa in the ongoing Test in Durban, becoming the highest scorer while batting alongside the lower order in a Test innings since 2002.
Renshaw's magnificent knock, his career-best in Test cricket, saw him score 174 runs in partnerships with the tailenders. This performance eclipses Kohli's previous record of 171, which he achieved during his massive 235 against England at the Wankhede Stadium in 2016.
Resilience in the Face of Collapse
The Australian innings was in disarray at 124/6 before Renshaw took charge. He forged crucial partnerships, including an 86-run stand with captain Pat Cummins, contributing 41 runs. He then added 12 runs with Mitchell Starc in a 20-run partnership.
His most impactful collaboration was a significant 134-run partnership for the ninth wicket with Nathan Lyon, of which Renshaw himself scored 100. He concluded his partnership efforts with 21 runs off a 26-run stand with Josh Hazlewood. These contributions were vital in Australia reaching a total of 390 all out on Day 2.
A Marathon Innings and New Milestones
Renshaw faced a marathon 397 deliveries in his exceptional innings, striking 21 fours and a six. He narrowly missed out on a maiden Test double century, falling to Simon Harmer. His innings not only revived Australia's fortunes but also set two significant records at the Kingsmead ground.
His 190 is now the highest individual score by an Australian at the Durban venue, surpassing Phillip Hughes' 160 from 2009. Furthermore, it is the highest Test score at Kingsmead by a batsman batting at number five or lower, bettering Kusal Perera's unbeaten 153 from 2019.
South Africa's Reply and Day's End
In response, South Africa reached 27/1 by the close of play, trailing by 363 runs. Josh Hazlewood provided the breakthrough by dismissing Ryan Rickelton for a duck. Aiden Markram was unbeaten on 15, and David Bedingham was on 12 when bad light prematurely ended the day's play.
Wiaan Mulder was the standout bowler for South Africa, taking 4/68, with Marco Jansen claiming three wickets and Anrich Nortje picking up two.
