Relief Reaches Kewat-Mallah Families in Bilgada Amid Flood Threat
Mahatma Gandhi Seva Ashram workers provided essential relief materials to flood-affected Kewat-Mallah families in Bilgada.

Relief Reaches Bilgada Amid Flood Threat
In the face of a crisis sparked by continuous rainfall along the Chambal River, the Mahatma Gandhi Seva Ashram, Jaura, reached out to needy Kewat-Mallah families in Bilgada village on Sunday, August 23. The outreach provided crucial relief materials to these families, many of whom reside near the riverbank.
Under the auspices of Shubhkam Ventures, Mumbai, durable tarpaulin sheets were distributed. These were intended to help families protect their homes and livestock during the monsoon season. The service campaign, rooted in Gandhian principles, aims to extend aid to the most marginalized individuals in society.
Service Beyond Obstacles
The Ashram's workers demonstrated remarkable dedication by reaching the village despite difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions. This journey underscored their commitment to service and their unwavering spirit.
Guided by the Ashram's President and renowned Gandhian social activist, Dr. Rajagopal P.V., the team also held a meeting with the villagers. This gathering provided a platform to directly address their concerns and engage in meaningful dialogue about their fundamental needs.
Focus on Livelihoods and Rights
During the meeting, villagers discussed issues related to livelihood, housing, rehabilitation, drinking water, employment, and other essential requirements. The relief provided was accompanied by a focus on these critical areas of concern.
"The Ashram's objective is not just to provide immediate relief during a crisis, but to continuously strive for sustainable solutions to the fundamental problems of needy and deprived families," stated Dilip Jain, Secretary of the Mahatma Gandhi Seva Ashram.
Jain further elaborated that under Dr. Rajagopal P.V.'s leadership, the Ashram is actively engaged in public dialogue and efforts concerning the livelihood, employment, safe rehabilitation, land, housing, drinking water, health, and education of the Kewat-Mallah community. He highlighted the environmental importance of the Chambal River and gharial conservation, stressing the concurrent need to ensure the livelihoods and safety of families whose traditional river-based livelihoods have been impacted by conservation measures.
Second Phase of Service Campaign and Future Plans
Prafull Srivastava, Joint Secretary of the Mahatma Gandhi Seva Ashram, announced that the meeting in Bilgada marks the second phase of the Ashram's service campaign among the Kewat-Mallah community. He clarified that the initiative will extend to other villages and hamlets along the Chambal River, aiming to understand and address the specific problems faced by each community.
Srivastava explained the core spirit of Gandhian service: reaching out to the last person in society, understanding their suffering, and becoming partners in their journey towards solutions. This approach emphasizes empathy and collaborative problem-solving.
Monsoon Challenges and Traditional Livelihood Crisis
Bilgada and numerous other villages along the Chambal, including those in the Mallapura Panchayat, Bridghari, and Jhundpura of Kodera Panchayat, are home to many Kewat-Mallah families. The monsoon season makes accessing these settlements extremely difficult due to muddy and waterlogged paths.
Protecting homes and livestock during heavy rains and floods presents a significant challenge for these riverbank communities. The provision of durable tarpaulin sheets has offered immediate relief in such critical situations. Furthermore, the implementation of gharial conservation measures and the ban on sand mining in the Chambal River have impacted traditional livelihoods, including fishing.
This has led to a severe employment and livelihood crisis for many families, forcing some to migrate. Recognizing this, the Mahatma Gandhi Seva Ashram is committed to addressing not only immediate relief but also long-term solutions for livelihood preservation, employment, safe rehabilitation, land, housing, drinking water, electricity, health, and education.
Commitment to Dignified Living with Rights
Speakers at the meeting emphasized the critical need to protect the rights of marginalized communities concerning water, forests, and land. Ensuring a safe, dignified, and self-reliant life for them was highlighted as paramount.
The Mahatma Gandhi Seva Ashram will continue its efforts through service, dialogue, and community participation to foster the holistic development and lasting solutions for the Kewat-Mallah community's challenges. The initiative in Bilgada serves as a powerful example that true Gandhian service extends beyond mere aid distribution; it involves understanding the suffering of those in need, advocating for their rights, and standing with them in finding solutions.
Ashram officials confirmed that the service campaign, initiated in Bilgada, will expand to other Kewat-Mallah villages and hamlets along the Chambal River. There, workers will engage with the community, carrying forward the spirit of "Service, Dialogue, and Solutions."
