Real Madrid climbed to the top of the LaLiga table after a 3-1 victory against Villarreal at Santiago Bernabeu on October 5. Vinicius Jr. was the standout performer, scoring twice, while Kylian Mbappe added a late goal to secure Madrid’s seventh league win of the season, moving them two points clear of Barcelona. Villarreal, reduced to 10 men after Santiago Mourino’s red card, remain third with 16 points.
The match remained goalless at halftime despite chances at both ends. Real gradually grew into the game, with Tchouameni heading wide and Mbappe nearly capitalizing on defensive errors, while Villarreal’s best opportunity came from Tani Oluwaseyi, saved by Thibaut Courtois.
The breakthrough came early in the second half as Vinicius Jr. scored a deflected effort. He later won and converted a penalty to make it 2-0. Villarreal’s Georges Mikautadze pulled one back shortly after, but Mourino’s second yellow card reduced them to ten men. Mbappe sealed the 3-1 win in the 80th minute following a counterattack orchestrated by Brahim Diaz.
Manager Xabi Alonso praised Vinicius Jr.’s impact, saying, “I really liked it, not just the goals. He was decisive and had a great attitude… He looked happy out there.” Alonso also noted the team’s patience and focus in executing their chances.
With the win, Real Madrid lead LaLiga with 21 points, while Barcelona trail by two ahead of their clash with Sevilla.
