Pioneering Plantation of 'Ravana Fruit' in Narsinghgarh

Narsinghgarh, October 22, 2026 – In a unique initiative on the occasion of Vijayadashami, a plantation of the rare South American fruit species 'Ravana Fruit' (Rollinia deliciosa) has been undertaken in Narsinghgarh. This planting, developed under the IRE-Jungle at the nascent Abhay Vanodyanam, is considered the first official attempt of this specific species in Madhya Pradesh.

The initiative aims to enrich the state's biodiversity and enhance public awareness towards conservation efforts. The founder of the institution, Puneet Upadhyay, stated that these Ravana fruit saplings were specially prepared from seeds in their local nursery. This plantation exemplifies the concept of 'ex-situ conservation', where a species is protected by removing it from its natural habitat.

The Uniqueness of 'Ravana Fruit' and Other Fruit Species

'Ravana Fruit' is recognized for its distinctive texture. The protruding spiky parts on its fruit's surface give it a crown-like appearance, while its pulp has a creamy, custard-like taste and a pleasant aroma. Narsinghgarh is already renowned for its Custard Apple (Sitaphal), and now, to further expand this botanical heritage, a collection of species like Ramphal, Lakshman Phal, and Ravana Fruit is being developed.

Goals of Biodiversity and Public Awareness

The objective of IRE-Jungle's initiative extends beyond merely increasing botanical diversity. It also focuses on the study of rare flora, seed conservation, and raising public awareness about the importance of biodiversity. Plans are in place to develop Abhay Vanodyanam into a major attraction for tourists, researchers, and nature lovers in the future.

The institution aims to establish this Vanodyanam as a center for research and environmental education, connecting traditional festivals with responsibility towards nature and a commitment to preparing a green legacy for the future.
