Rajinikanth & Kamal Haasan Reunite After 46 Years for Thalaivar 173

In what’s being hailed as one of the biggest cinematic collaborations in Indian film history, veteran superstars Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan are joining forces once again for a new film titled Thalaivar 173. The movie will be directed by Sundar C and produced by Raaj Kamal Films International (RKFI), Kamal Haasan’s home banner.

The Announcement

The project was officially confirmed on November 5, 2025, through a statement from RKFI. The release described the film as a “landmark collaboration” celebrating five decades of friendship and brotherhood between the two icons.

“Commemorating 44 years of Raaj Kamal Films International, #Thalaivar173 unites Superstar Rajinikanth’s magnetic screen presence with Sundar C’s direction, in a landmark production envisioned by Kamal Haasan and R. Mahendran,” said the press note.

A Reunion 46 Years in the Making

Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan last appeared together in the 1979 classic Ninaithale Inikkum. Their upcoming reunion under Sundar C — who previously directed Arunachalam (1997) and Anbe Sivam (2003) — promises a blend of mass entertainment and emotional storytelling.

The Journey to Thalaivar 173

Rumours of the duo’s reunion began after the success of Coolie (Rajini–Lokesh Kanagaraj) earlier this year. Kamal Haasan humorously hinted at their collaboration during his speech at the SIIMA Awards 2025, saying:

“We wanted a full biscuit each, and we got it. Now we’re content with half a biscuit again — so we’ve come together.”

Rajinikanth later confirmed that discussions were underway and that the film would proceed “if we find a story worthy of both of us.”
