Railway Safety Commissioner Inspects Byawra-Sonekach Rail Section, Successful Trial Run at 120 km/h
Railway Safety Commissioner inspects Byawra-Sonekach rail section, conducting a successful speed trial at 120 km/h for the Bhopal-Ramganjmandi project.

Successful Inspection and Speed Trial on Byawra-Sonekach Rail Section
Shri Guru Prakash, Railway Safety Commissioner (CRS) for the Central Circle, conducted a comprehensive inspection and safety test of the newly constructed 24.50 kilometer Byawra Rajgarh-Sonekach rail section. This section is part of the Bhopal-Ramganjmandi new railway line project.
Following the inspection on August 21, 2026, a successful speed trial was held on this critical section, reaching a maximum speed of 120 kilometers per hour. This inspection marks a significant milestone in the railway project, ensuring the safety and technical suitability for both passenger and freight train operations.
Details of the Rail Section and Progress
The Byawra Rajgarh-Sonekach rail section spans a total of 24.50 kilometers. It includes the construction of a Pipalkheda Halt station, four major bridges, and 53 smaller bridges. The Commissioner meticulously examined key infrastructure, including track quality, bridges, level crossings, and signaling and telecommunication systems.
During the two-day inspection, the Commissioner observed various parts of the rail section using a motor trolley and tested compliance with established safety standards. On the first day, he also thoroughly inspected the yards of Byawra Rajgarh and Sonekach stations, assessing railway facilities and safety arrangements.
Bhopal-Ramganjmandi Project: A Broader Perspective
The overall Bhopal-Ramganjmandi new railway line project is 276 kilometers long and will feature a total of 27 proposed stations. This ambitious project aims to connect the states of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, directly benefiting districts such as Bhopal, Sehore, Rajgarh, Jhalawar, and Kota.
The project is divided into two divisions: 111 kilometers under the Bhopal division and 165 kilometers under the Kota division. This division ensures efficient management and execution of the project. Within the Bhopal division's portion, 80 kilometers have already been commissioned, including the Nishatpura D Cabin-Kurawar and Byawra Rajgarh-Sonekach sections.
Future Milestones and Completion Targets
The remaining sections, specifically the Kurawar-Narsinghgarh and Narsinghgarh-Sonekach rail sections, are targeted for completion by the financial year 2026-27. This is a crucial step towards finalizing the project's last phase and establishing complete rail connectivity between Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
As of March 2026, approximately 50% of the track construction for the 276-kilometer Ramganjmandi-Bhopal line was completed. The entire project is expected to be finished by December 2027, although some reports suggest a potential completion in 2026, contingent on the progress of various components.
Expected Benefits and Economic Impact
Upon completion, the new railway line will significantly improve rail connectivity for both passenger and freight transport. The new route will be approximately 42 kilometers shorter than the current Byawra-Jhalawar route, potentially reducing travel time by about 3 hours. This will lead to fuel savings and reduced transportation costs, with a positive environmental impact.
A budget of ₹1,255 crore has been allocated for the construction of the 111-kilometer rail line and 12 stations in the Bhopal division. This project will provide direct and seamless connectivity between various stations in the Bhopal and Kota divisions, making travel more convenient and freight movement more efficient. The distance between Bhopal and Kota is expected to decrease by approximately 100 kilometers.
Safety Standards and Official Presence
The inspection by the Railway Safety Commissioner underscores the high priority placed on safety standards throughout the project's various stages. Present at the event were several senior officials and staff from construction and related departments, including DRM Shri Pankaj Tyagi, Chief Administrative Officer/Construction Shri M. S. Hashmi, Chief Project Manager Shri Pankaj Swain, Deputy Chief Engineer (Construction) Shri Mohd. Wasim, and Chief Engineer (Track Machine) Shri A. K. Tomar. Their presence highlighted the project's importance and the railway's commitment to its successful execution.
