Rahul Gandhi Slams Manusmriti, Criticizes Limited Identity for Women
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi strongly criticized patriarchal thinking and limited identities imposed on women, referencing Manusmriti.

Congress Leader Criticizes Patriarchal Thinking, Cites Manusmriti
Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, made sharp remarks on women's freedom, equality, and patriarchal mindsets during the 'Students' Echo' event in Pune. He strongly criticized the thinking, as referenced in Manusmriti, that confines women to the authority of their father, husband, or son.
Addressing the event which concluded on August 22, Rahul Gandhi urged the youth to challenge such narrow-mindedness and accept women with their individual existence and independent identities. He stated, "Manusmriti speaks of confining women's lives to their father, husband, and son. This is extremely shameful. A woman is not anyone's property; she has her own independent existence and identity."
Challenging Traditional Roles
Rahul Gandhi emphasized that viewing a woman solely as a daughter, wife, or mother narrows her complete identity. While these relationships are significant aspects of a woman's life, they cannot be her sole identity. He highlighted that women actively participate as professionals, athletes, students, entrepreneurs, and citizens in various societal spheres.
He asserted that women should have the complete right to make their own choices, pursue careers, and decide on crucial life decisions. Women are not just defined by familial roles but by their diverse contributions to society and their personal aspirations.
Women's Power as Nation's Greatest Asset
The Congress leader declared that India's greatest strength lies in its nearly 700 million women. He described the imagination, dreams, and capabilities of women as the nation's biggest capital. Gandhi believes that the country can only utilize its full potential when women are given the opportunity to grow freely.
In this context, he also stressed the necessity of challenging the patriarchal system. Rahul Gandhi specifically urged the youth to play an active role in changing the social mindset that seeks to control women. According to him, women should be given the opportunity to determine their own identity and future, rather than being bound by fear, pressure, and social constraints.
Students Raise Concerns on Education, Career, and Security
During the 'Students' Echo' program, female students raised numerous important issues including education, competitive exams, paper leaks, careers, security, and social pressures. Rahul Gandhi listened patiently to their problems and, addressing them, stated that women's safety and dignity are equally essential alongside education and employment opportunities.
He assured that Congress would actively work on these issues. The event provided a platform for students to voice their concerns directly to a national leader, seeking concrete assurances and action.
BJP Reacts, Accuses Gandhi of Attacking Hindu Traditions
Following Rahul Gandhi's remarks on Manusmriti, political reactions have emerged. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders have strongly objected to the Congress leader's statement. BJP leaders accused Rahul Gandhi of consistently targeting Hinduism and Sanatan traditions.
They linked the statement to an 'anti-Hindu mindset' and deemed such commentary on religious texts for political gain inappropriate. BJP leader Nishikant Dubey also retaliated against Rahul Gandhi's statement, questioning his understanding of Manusmriti. He sarcastically commented on the Congress leader, referencing a shloka.
Congress Supports Gandhi, Debate Intensifies
Conversely, the Congress and its supporters have backed Rahul Gandhi's statement, linking it to the fight for women's freedom and gender equality. They believe that Rahul Gandhi has paved the way for women's empowerment by attacking social stereotypes and patriarchal thinking.
Rahul Gandhi's statement has once again intensified the political debate in the country concerning Manusmriti, women's rights, social traditions, and patriarchy. The 'Students' Echo' event in Pune, originally organized to dialogue on students' issues, has now also become a significant platform for these deep ideological and political discussions.
This development will further amplify the ongoing broader social discussion in India regarding gender equality and women's rights.
