In a tragic accident early Sunday morning, three young men — two cousins and their friend — were killed after their speeding car rammed into a metro pillar near Bund Garden Metro Station in Pune.
The crash occurred around 5 a.m. on Bund Garden Road, according to the Koregaon Park police.
The deceased were identified as:
-
Rutvik Vinayak Bhandari alias Om (23) – an MBA finance graduate from Pimpri Gaon working in a private firm;
-
Yash Prasad Bhandari (23) – a software engineer with a Pune-based company;
-
Khushwant Kishor Tekwani (19) – a BTech student from Beed, studying at MIT College, Pune.
Police said Rutvik was driving the Volkswagen Polo, which was completely mangled due to the high-speed impact. Local residents and police rushed the trio to Sassoon General Hospital, where both cousins were declared dead on arrival. Tekwani, who was placed on ventilator support, later succumbed to his injuries.
Senior Inspector Sangeeta Jadhav said preliminary investigation indicated that speeding was the cause. Police have collected blood and viscera samples to test for the presence of alcohol, after a beer bottle was found near the car. Investigators are also analyzing phone records to determine the trio’s movements before the crash.
Following post-mortem examinations, the bodies were handed over to their families by Sunday evening.
