PSL 2026 Off to a Colourful Start

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026 commenced on March 26 with an unexpected controversy during the match between Lahore Qalandars and Hyderabad Kingsmen. The regular white cricket ball turned pink.

This bizarre occurrence was attributed to dye from the Hyderabad Kingsmen's jerseys rubbing off onto the ball during play. Marnus Labuschagne noted it as a first-time incident.

The 'Pink-Ball Contest'

The match, held at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, quickly became known as a 'pink-ball contest' among fans. The Hyderabad Kingsmen captain alerted the umpires after noticing the colour change.

The dye from his team’s jerseys was transferring onto the white ball, gradually turning it pink and later reddish.

"I did say to the umpires after the second over, 'What's going on? The ball is red.' It must be from the clothes or something like that. I haven't seen anything like this before,"

Labuschagne told reporters.

Labuschagne added,

"I've seen occasions where something on a bat comes onto the ball, or when it hits the pad and takes a bit of paint off. But I've never seen this happen with clothing. I'm sure they'll sort it out in the next few games."

Questions Over Kit Quality

Following the match, the Hyderabad Kingsmen made a humorous post on X referencing the 'pink-ball contest'. However, the incident has sparked concerns about the quality of the approved kits.

Cricketers often polish the ball with their jerseys to maintain shine, but this dye transfer raised questions about kit quality control. Many consider the situation an embarrassment for the PSL.

Match Summary: Lahore Qalandars Dominate

Lahore Qalandars secured a dominant 69-run victory over Hyderabad Kingsmen. Lahore posted 199/4, with Fakhar Zaman’s 53 and Haseebullah Khan’s unbeaten 40 leading the charge.

Hyderabad were bowled out for 130 in response. Ubaid Shah, Sikandar Raza, and Haris Rauf each took two wickets.

Other PSL 2026 Challenges

The tournament is being played behind closed doors due to the West Asia crisis and is limited to Lahore and Karachi.

PSL 2026 has also faced the challenge of losing several overseas players, many of whom have joined IPL teams as replacements.

What to Watch Next

It remains to be seen how PSL organizers will address the kit quality issue to prevent similar incidents in future matches. All eyes will be on the upcoming games to see if the issue is resolved and if the league can overcome its other challenges.
