President Murmu's Romania Visit: Agreement to Enhance Cooperation in Trade and Technology

Historic State Visit to Romania

President Droupadi Murmu has undertaken a historic state visit to Romania, marking the final leg of her three-nation European tour. This is the first visit by an Indian head of state to Romania in nearly three decades, with the objective of injecting new momentum into the bilateral economic and technical relations between the two countries.

Extensive Bilateral Discussions Held

During her visit, President Murmu held extensive bilateral talks in Bucharest with Romania's President Nicolae Ciucă and Prime Minister Ion Marcel Ciolacu. Discussions at the high-level meetings focused on enhancing cooperation in key sectors such as trade, investment, defense, renewable energy, and education, with both sides expressing agreement on these fronts.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared on the social media platform 'X' that President Murmu's discussions with Romanian President Nicolae Ciucă were highly productive. Both leaders reviewed all dimensions of bilateral cooperation and deliberated on ways to further strengthen relations in areas of mutual interest.

Memorandums of Understanding Signed

On this occasion, Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were also signed in the fields of science and technology, sports, and culture. Jaiswal further stated that President Murmu also met with Romania's Prime Minister Ion Marcel Ciolacu. This meeting involved fruitful discussions on advancing the India-Romania partnership, with a particular emphasis on further strengthening cooperation in the areas of trade, investment, clean energy, connectivity, and emerging technologies.

Emphasis on 'Viksit Bharat 2047' and Declaration of Innovation Year

According to a statement released from the official 'X' handle of the President's Secretariat, as a significant milestone of the visit, President Murmu also addressed the 'India-Romania Business Forum'. Leading corporate leaders and policymakers from both nations participated in this forum. Highlighting India's evolving role on the global stage, the President presented India's visionary goal of 'Viksit Bharat 2047' to the world. She stated that India is rapidly progressing towards becoming a developed nation by the centenary year of its independence, and reliable global partners like Romania can play a crucial role in achieving this goal.

Focus on Technological Collaboration

Emphasizing technological engagement, President Murmu highlighted that India's Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), rapidly growing startup ecosystem, and global leadership in Information Technology (IT) are unparalleled. She stressed that this is an opportune moment to connect India's digital prowess with Romania's specific expertise.

New Chapter in Diplomatic Relations

Solidifying this diplomatic outreach, the agreements reached between India and Romania in fields such as science and technology, education, and sports are being considered a milestone. Both countries have also decided to celebrate the 80th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2028 as the 'India-Romania Year of Innovation'. The President's visit has not only opened a new chapter in India-Romania relations but has also elevated India's strategic and economic partnership with Eastern Europe to new heights.
