Massive Counterfeit Note Discovery Rocks PNB Currency Chest

The banking sector is in turmoil following the discovery of approximately Rs 17 crore worth of counterfeit notes at the Punjab National Bank (PNB) currency chest in Saharanpur. In the wake of this serious financial irregularity, three senior bank officials have been suspended, and an FIR has been filed against them.

Separately, a case of theft has been registered against a part-time housekeeper. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to thoroughly investigate the matter and uncover the full extent of the issue.

Irregularities Uncovered During Cash Dispatch

The entire incident came to light when nearly Rs 11.50 crore in cash was dispatched from the Sohfia Market branch in Saharanpur to the Jaipur office of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). During the counting of cash at the RBI, a discrepancy of over Rs 4.30 lakh was found.

Following this discrepancy, an internal investigation was initiated at the bank level. The role of a part-time housekeeper, Vishal Kumar, was revealed through CCTV footage, where he was allegedly seen removing money from bundles of notes. Subsequently, a detailed audit of the bank commenced on August 9.

Sophisticated Method Used to Conceal Fake Notes

As the audit progressed, significant irregularities concerning the large volume of cash stored in the currency chest began to surface. The investigation revealed that genuine notes were placed at the top and bottom of the bundles, with counterfeit notes stuffed in between. This method was evidently used to make the bundles of fake notes appear as genuine ones at first glance.

This shocking revelation has raised serious questions about the bank's internal security and the monitoring system of its currency chest. The incident has brought to the forefront critical questions regarding how such a large quantity of counterfeit currency managed to reach the currency chest and why it was not identified during routine checks over an extended period.

Investigation Focuses on Internal Security and Network

A key aspect of the investigation will be to determine whether the process of substituting fake notes with genuine ones occurred all at once or if it was a gradual, long-term operation. If the latter is true, a thorough probe into how many employees or other individuals were aware of this activity will be necessary.

Another significant question pertains to the cash reconciliation and audit process within the currency chest. The failure to detect the difference between genuine and counterfeit notes in such a large amount during regular verification is a crucial point for the investigating agencies.

Supply Chain and Wider Network Under Scrutiny

The investigation may also focus on the origin of the counterfeit notes and whether they were introduced into the currency chest through an organized network. However, confirmation of these suspicions will only be possible after the investigation is complete.

Bank management has stated that the suspected counterfeit notes were not circulated among the public or to any other branch and remained within the bank's treasury. Nevertheless, investigating agencies are working to ensure that no counterfeit notes have exited the currency chest at any level.

There is also a possibility that the figures might increase as the audit concludes. It remains to be seen whether the investigation will be limited to the alleged exchange of notes worth Rs 17 crore or if a larger financial scam will be uncovered. Currently, with the suspension of three senior officials, the FIR, and action against the housekeeper, bank records, CCTV footage, cash movement, and previous audit reports of the currency chest are being thoroughly examined.

The roles of the culprits and the entire network involved will only be revealed after the SIT completes its investigation.
