India celebrated its 80th Independence Day on Saturday, August 15, 2026, with widespread patriotism and pride. At the historic Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hoisted the national flag, the Tricolour, for the 13th consecutive time.

Following the flag hoisting, the Prime Minister addressed the nation, highlighting the government's priorities concerning national security, development, self-reliance, and future aspirations. The Independence Day festivities commenced with Prime Minister Modi's visit to Raj Ghat, where he paid homage to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, by offering floral tributes.

Showcase of Indigenous Defence Capabilities

During the flag hoisting ceremony, the Prime Minister accepted a 21-gun salute. A significant feature of this year's salute was the use of indigenous 105mm light field guns. This salute, rendered by the 1721 Field Battery, not only showcased military pride but also reinforced the nation's growing indigenous defence capabilities and the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India) campaign.

This move symbolized the ongoing efforts towards self-sufficiency in the country's defence production. The presence of 'Vande Mataram' during this year's ceremony was a special highlight, drawing particular attention.
