Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday set out on a diplomatic tour of Jordan, Ethiopia and Oman, a visit that New Delhi sees as significant for reinforcing India’s engagement with West Asia, Africa and the wider Global South. The trip coincides with major diplomatic milestones with Jordan and Oman and underlines India’s effort to deepen political, economic and people-to-people ties beyond its immediate neighbourhood.
In a departure statement issued before leaving New Delhi, the Prime Minister said the three countries share long-standing civilizational links with India and enjoy what he described as “exceptional bilateral relations”.
Jordan: Marking 75 Years of Diplomatic Relations
Mr. Modi’s first stop will be Jordan, undertaken at the invitation of King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein. The visit marks 75 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Jordan.
According to the Prime Minister’s office, Mr. Modi is scheduled to hold detailed talks with King Abdullah II, Prime Minister Jafar Hassan and Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah. Discussions are expected to focus on political cooperation, regional stability in West Asia, trade, defence collaboration and cultural exchanges.
Officials familiar with the agenda said the visit reflects India’s growing engagement with moderate voices in the region and its interest in strengthening partnerships that contribute to regional peace and security.
Ethiopia: First Visit, Parliamentary Address
From Jordan, the Prime Minister will travel to Ethiopia, marking his first-ever visit to the African nation. A key highlight of the visit will be Mr. Modi’s address to a joint session of the Ethiopian Parliament.
In his statement, the Prime Minister said he would share India’s democratic experience, referring to the country as the “Mother of Democracy,” and outline how closer cooperation between India and Ethiopia can benefit the Global South. Talks with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali are expected to cover development cooperation, capacity building, trade, and multilateral coordination, particularly in forums where developing countries seek a stronger collective voice.
The Prime Minister will also interact with members of the Indian community in Ethiopia, acknowledging their role in strengthening bilateral ties.
Oman: 70 Years of Diplomatic Ties
The final leg of the tour will take Mr. Modi to the Sultanate of Oman, where India and Oman are marking 70 years of diplomatic relations. In Muscat, the Prime Minister will meet the Sultan of Oman to discuss ways to further deepen the India-Oman Strategic Partnership.
Government sources said discussions are likely to focus on boosting trade and investment, energy cooperation, and expanding collaboration in emerging sectors. The Prime Minister is also scheduled to address the Indian diaspora in Oman, which has played a long-standing role in the country’s economic development and in fostering close India-Oman relations.

The three-nation tour underscores India’s diplomatic emphasis on strengthening ties across regions that are central to its economic interests, energy security and strategic outreach to the Global South. Analysts note that such visits also reinforce India’s image as a partner focused on dialogue, development and long-term cooperation rather than short-term alignments.
