Plant-Forward Diet Linked to Lower Kidney Disease Risk, Large Study Finds

What happened:
A large international study has found that people who follow a plant-forward diet, especially one that limits added sugars and unhealthy fats, may significantly reduce their risk of developing chronic kidney disease (CKD).

The findings were published on January 26, 2026, in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) and are based on long-term health data from the UK.


Why this matters now

Chronic kidney disease affects around 10% of adults worldwide and is projected to become the fifth leading cause of death globally by 2040. CKD often develops silently, progressing over years before symptoms appear, making prevention through lifestyle choices increasingly important.

Diet has long been recognised as a key factor in kidney health, but this study strengthens evidence that what people eat — not just how much — plays a crucial role.


Inside the study

Researchers analysed data from the UK Biobank, one of the world’s largest long-term health studies. The analysis included:

  • 179,508 participants aged 40–69

  • Participants from England, Scotland, and Wales

  • A median follow-up period of 12 years

During the study period, 4,819 participants (2.7%) developed chronic kidney disease.

Dietary habits were assessed using detailed questionnaires, allowing researchers to compare kidney health outcomes with adherence to different eating patterns.


What is the EAT–Lancet planetary diet?

The study focused on adherence to the EAT–Lancet planetary health diet, a dietary pattern designed to support both human health and environmental sustainability.

Key features include:

  • High intake of fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and whole grains

  • Moderate consumption of meat and dairy

  • Strict limits on red meat

  • Reduced intake of added sugars and unhealthy fats

Unlike some other popular diets, the EAT–Lancet approach places specific caps on sugar and fat consumption, which researchers say may be particularly beneficial for kidney health.


Key findings

Researchers found that:

  • Greater adherence to the EAT–Lancet diet was associated with a significantly lower risk of developing CKD

  • The protective effect was especially strong among:

    • Individuals living in areas with low access to green spaces

    • People with certain genetic risk variants linked to kidney disease

According to the study authors, limiting added sugars and fats may reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, two processes known to accelerate kidney damage.


How it compares to other healthy diets

The study also looked at similarities with other well-known eating patterns, such as:

  • DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension)

  • Mediterranean-style diets

While these diets also emphasise fruits, vegetables, and reduced red meat — all linked to better kidney outcomes — researchers noted that the distinct sugar and fat limits in the EAT–Lancet diet may offer additional protection.

“A key commonality among these dietary patterns is higher intake of plant foods and reduced red meat,” the authors noted, “but the EAT–Lancet diet’s tighter controls on sugar and fat may further lower kidney disease risk.”
