An Indian pilot, Captain Smit Machchhar, has revealed that he opened the cockpit door of an Israel-bound Flydubai aircraft while under physical attack from his co-pilot. The courageous act allowed passengers to enter the cockpit and help control the plane as it experienced a rapid descent.
Speaking in a video call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Captain Machchhar described the harrowing moments. He was on the ground and injured, still grappling with his co-pilot, when he realised the gravity of the situation – the plane was sinking rapidly.
Desperate Measures to Prevent Disaster
“I was lying on the floor injured but I told myself to go for one last push to open the door from inside,” Captain Machchhar stated during the call. He acknowledged that other individuals also played a crucial role in bringing the situation under control after he managed to open the door.
The pilot emphasized his commitment to passenger safety, even in his own perilous circumstances. “I was of course fighting for my own life but at the same time I knew I was not going to let others die,” he added, highlighting his resolve to protect everyone on board.
Diversion to Saudi Arabia
The incident occurred on a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The alleged attack by another pilot onboard forced the aircraft to divert its course and land in Saudi Arabia. Further details regarding the identity of the co-pilot and the exact nature of the attack are expected to be released.
