Parliamentary Committee Reviews Urban Schemes' Progress in Andaman

The Cliff News | Swaraj Island | September 3, 2026 An important review meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Housing and Urban Affairs was held in Swaraj Island, Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This meeting was part of the Ministry's 'Chennai-Andaman & Nicobar' study tour, focusing on an in-depth discussion of the progress and implementation of central urban development schemes.

The three-day study tour included committee members such as Rajya Sabha Member from Madhya Pradesh, Smt. Maya Narolia. Senior representatives from the Andaman & Nicobar Union Territory Administration, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Department of Financial Services (DFS), Sree Vijaya Puram Nagar Parishad, HUDCO, NBCC, CPWD, as well as leading financial institutions like the State Bank of India (SBI) and Bank of Baroda, also participated.

Review of Urban Scheme Implementation

The review meeting provided a detailed examination of the on-ground implementation of ambitious central urban development schemes, including AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation), SBM-U (Swachh Bharat Mission - Urban), and PMAY-U 2.0 (Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana - Urban). Officials presented comprehensive details of achievements to date, effective implementation methods, and future action plans under these initiatives.

Policy-level discussions were also held on expanding modern infrastructure, sustainable urban planning, and strengthening civic amenities across the island territories. The meeting aimed to identify and address challenges in development work promptly and practically, ensuring civic amenities in remote areas are developed to global standards.

Development of Civic Amenities in Remote Areas

Following the meeting, Rajya Sabha Member Maya Narolia highlighted the commitment of the central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She stated that the government is fully dedicated to providing accessible housing, clean drinking water, and modern urban facilities to every citizen living in the remote and coastal areas of the country.

MP Narolia explained that the primary objective of the committee's study tour is to upgrade civic amenities in strategically important island territories like Andaman & Nicobar to global standards and to find swift and practical solutions to the challenges encountered in development work.
