Pakistani Woman Alleges Abandonment by Husband, Appeals to PM Modi for Justice

A Pakistani woman, Nikita Nagdev, has accused her husband, Vikram Nagdev, of abandoning her in Karachi while allegedly planning a second marriage in Delhi. In a video appeal addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she called for justice, highlighting her distress and urging support for women facing marital abuse.

Background

• Nikita, a Karachi resident, married Vikram, a Pakistani-origin man residing in Indore on a long-term visa, on 26 January 2020 in Karachi under Hindu customs.

• On 26 February 2020, Vikram brought her to India, but within months, she alleges her life took a distressing turn.

• On 9 July 2020, she claims Vikram abandoned her at the Attari border, citing visa technicalities, and sent her back to Pakistan. Since then, he has allegedly refused to bring her back.

Allegations

• Nikita says she discovered her husband was allegedly involved with a relative. When she raised the matter, her father-in-law reportedly dismissed it.

• She claims that during the COVID-19 lockdown, Vikram forced her return to Pakistan and has since barred her re-entry.

• Distressed, she filed a formal complaint on 27 January 2025.

Legal Proceedings

• The case was taken up by the Sindhi Panch Mediation and Legal Counsel Centre, authorised by the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

• Notices were issued to Vikram and his alleged fiancée, and a hearing was conducted.

• Mediation failed, and in a report dated 30 April 2025, the Centre noted that since neither spouse is an Indian citizen, the matter falls under Pakistan’s jurisdiction, recommending Vikram’s deportation.

• Earlier, in May 2025, Nikita had approached the Indore Social Panchayat, which also recommended deportation. Collector Ashish Singh confirmed an enquiry is underway and action will follow based on the report.

Appeal

In her video, Nikita said, “If justice is not served today, women will lose faith in the system. Many girls face physical and mental abuse in their marital homes. I urge everyone to stand with me.”

The case has sparked attention from social and legal groups in both India and Pakistan, highlighting cross-border marital disputes and the challenges faced by women in such situations.
