PSL Faces Fuel Crisis Fallout

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is set to start on March 26 but will be drastically different. Due to the recent spike in oil prices linked to the Middle East conflict, matches will be held without spectators.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi announced the changes on Sunday. The opening ceremony in Lahore has also been cancelled.

Venues Reduced, Ceremony Axed

The league's original plan included six cities. Now, only Lahore and Karachi will host games.

The opening match is scheduled for Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

 

"We don’t know how long this war will continue. We can’t ask people to restrict their movements and then have 30,000 people in stadiums every day. We decided that as long as this [oil] crisis is ongoing, we will not have crowds at matches. This was a difficult decision, but it needed to be made. The opening ceremony will also be cancelled."

 

Ticket Refunds and Franchise Compensation

The PCB will issue full refunds for all purchased tickets within 72 hours. Franchise owners will receive compensation for lost gate revenue.

Naqvi apologized to the cities of Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan, and Peshawar. These cities will no longer host PSL games this season.

 

"We have to restrict our movements, and we do not want to waste our resources. I especially apologise to Peshawar, which was due to host PSL games for the first time, [but] there will be no crowds anyway, so there was no reason to go to those cities."

 

Government Consultation and Player Withdrawals

Naqvi consulted with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the eight franchises before finalizing the decision.

Several foreign players have withdrawn from the PSL due to personal reasons. This includes Australians Jake Fraser-McGurk and Spencer Johnson, South African Ottneil Baartman, and Gudakesh Motie of the West Indies.
