Record Fuel Price Hike

In a stunning move, the Pakistani government announced a record PKR 55 per litre increase in the prices of both petrol and high-speed diesel.

The announcement, made just before midnight, cites supply disruptions stemming from the ongoing Middle East conflict.

Middle East Conflict Impact

Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik stated that the conflict had created uncertainty in the region, affecting global energy supply and prices.

"The fire that started in a neighbouring country has spread across the entire region. We do not know how long this crisis will continue, and there is no clear timeline for its end," he said.

Pakistan relies on oil supplies passing through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been affected by the conflict.

New Fuel Rates and Reserves

The ex-depot price of high-speed diesel is now PKR 335.86 per litre, a roughly 20 percent increase from PKR 280.86 per litre.

Petrol prices have been revised to PKR 321.17 per litre, up from PKR 266.17 per litre, representing approximately a 17 percent increase.

Despite the price hike, the government assured that the country has sufficient petroleum reserves.

Government Response and Monitoring

The government had previously considered measures like work-from-home policies, but decided against them for at least a week.

The petroleum minister warned of strict action against hoarding and artificial shortages of petroleum products.

He also stated that two Pakistani oil vessels were rerouting through alternative routes.

Weekly Price Reviews

The government will now review petroleum prices on a weekly basis, considering the volatile international market.

"As soon as the situation improves internationally, we will reduce prices at the same speed," Malik said.
