Generic Semaglutide Arrives in India

Several Indian pharmaceutical companies, including Natco Pharma, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals, and Eris Lifesciences, are introducing their generic versions of semaglutide for Type II diabetes on Saturday, following the expiry of the patent.

The launch includes Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, Zydus Lifesciences, Sun Pharma and Alkem, with industry expectations of around 50 branded generic versions entering the market.

Pricing and Availability

Natco has priced its semaglutide in multi-dose vials at ₹1,290 per month for 2 mg/1.5ml and 4mg/3ml, and ₹1,750 for 8mg/3ml. The pen device, launching in April, will cost ₹4,000, ₹4,200 and ₹4,500 per month for the respective strengths.

Eris Lifesciences, in collaboration with Natco, will offer similar pricing and timelines for its vials and pens.

Glenmark Pharmaceuticals' generic semaglutide will be available in vials with dose-specific syringes, and pre-filled pens. The weekly cost with the vials will range from Rs 325 (about Rs 1300 a month) to Rs 440, the company stated.

Doctor's Cautions

The availability of cheaper generics has raised concerns among doctors regarding potential misuse.

Dr. Rajiv Kovil, a diabetologist with Zandra Healthcare, emphasizes the importance of careful patient selection, ensuring tolerance to the product and screening for pre-existing conditions.

 

Patient-selection is critical to ensure they can tolerate the product; besides checking for eye-related issues, pancreatitis, and their family history of thyroid cancer.

 

He also highlighted the necessity of educating patients on proper micro-dosing techniques to prevent errors with the vial format.

Ozempic's Current Market Price

For comparison, Novo Nordisk's Ozempic is currently priced between ₹8,800 and ₹11,175 in India, in the pen format.
