CDS flags strategic impact of Operation Sindoor

Operation Sindoor triggered far-reaching consequences inside Pakistan, forcing the country into a constitutional and military reset, according to Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan.

Speaking on Friday at the Pune Public Policy Festival 2026, hosted at the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE), Gen Chauhan said Pakistan’s post-operation actions amounted to an implicit admission that the operation did not go in Islamabad’s favour.

He noted that the speed and scale of the changes reflected serious structural shortcomings revealed during the conflict.

Pakistan’s defence command reshaped

Gen Chauhan highlighted that Pakistan has abolished the post of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and replaced it with a new position of Chief of Defence Forces.

In parallel, Islamabad has established a National Strategy Command and an Army Rocket Forces Command, marking a significant reorganisation of its higher defence structure.

These changes concentrate land, joint, and strategic military authority in a single individual, a move the CDS described as a sharp departure from Pakistan’s earlier command balance.
