Ola Electric Mobility Ltd. has taken a major step to broaden its business beyond electric vehicles, with its board approving a proposal to raise up to ₹1,500 crore through equity or convertible instruments, according to a company filing with Indian stock exchanges.
The proposed capital raise could take multiple forms, including a public offer, rights issue, qualified institutional placement (QIP), or private placement, subject to shareholder approval. While the company has not specified how the funds will be allocated, the move comes shortly after its announcement of Ola Shakti, a portable battery energy storage system (BESS) aimed at entering India’s clean energy sector.
From Electric Vehicles to Energy Solutions
Ola Electric, which debuted on the stock market at ₹76 per share, has seen its shares trade lower, closing at ₹53.69 on Friday, October 24. Despite market fluctuations, the company is signaling an ambitious pivot. The launch of Ola Shakti on October 16 highlights its focus on energy storage technology, potentially catering to industrial, residential, and microgrid applications.
Industry experts note that India’s energy storage market is poised for growth due to increasing renewable energy adoption and government incentives. “Battery energy storage is critical for stabilising grids and supporting electric mobility infrastructure,” said Ramesh Menon, an energy analyst based in Bengaluru. “Ola Electric’s entry could accelerate competition and innovation in this space.”
Strategic Implications
The fundraising plan underscores Ola Electric’s intent to diversify revenue streams and reduce reliance on vehicle sales alone. Analysts say the move aligns with global trends, where EV makers are increasingly exploring integrated energy solutions, from solar partnerships to grid storage.
“The capital raise is timely, given the company’s aspirations in clean energy and India’s energy transition goals,” said Anjali Rao, a financial markets expert in Mumbai. “If managed well, it could position Ola as a leading player in both mobility and energy storage, enhancing its long-term valuation.”
The decision also reflects Ola’s broader ambition to integrate its electric vehicle ecosystem with renewable energy infrastructure, potentially offering home and commercial charging solutions that leverage BESS technology.
Next Steps
Shareholder approval will be critical before the fundraising proceeds. Once approved, Ola Electric could deploy the capital to expand R&D, manufacturing, and distribution of battery storage systems, complementing its existing electric mobility operations.
The development is closely watched by investors and policymakers alike, as it may influence the pace of India’s electric mobility and clean energy transition.
