Nothing OS 5.0 Rollout Begins, Features AI & Android 17

Nothing has commenced the rollout of its latest software update, Nothing OS 5.0, built upon the foundation of Android 17. The update is progressively reaching Nothing's smartphone lineup, promising a suite of new features including advanced Essential AI tools and a significant visual overhaul.

The Phone (3) was the first to receive the update, entering an Open Beta phase on August 26. Its general release is slated for mid-October. This phased approach ensures a controlled distribution, with different models receiving the stable software at varying times.

Rollout Schedule Details

Nothing is implementing a model-by-model rollout strategy for Nothing OS 5.0. The Phone (4a) Pro is scheduled to join the Open Beta in early September, with a general release expected in early November. Following closely, the Phone (4a), Phone (3a) Pro, and Phone (3a) will see their Open Betas commence in late September and general availability in early November.

Further down the line, the Phone (2a) and Phone (2a) Plus are slated for Open Beta in mid-October, with general releases anticipated in mid-November. Notably, some models will bypass the Open Beta entirely. The Phone (3a) Lite will receive its general release in late December, while the CMF Phone 2 Pro is also set for a direct general release in mid-January.

Extended Support and Exclusions

Device support windows are crucial, as evidenced by the exclusion of several older models from Nothing OS 5.0. The Phone (1), Phone (2), and CMF Phone 1 have concluded their major software support cycles and will not receive this update. This underscores the importance of checking a device's software support longevity before purchase, particularly for users intending to keep their phones for several years.

The Phone (4b) is on a later rollout schedule, with its Open Beta planned for mid-December and general release in mid-January. It's important for users to note that rollout timings are indicative and can be influenced by regional factors and carrier availability.

Open Beta Participation

Owners of the Phone (3) interested in early access can opt into the Open Beta program via Nothing Beta Hub V2.0. While installing the Open Beta does not result in data erasure, Nothing advises caution, as prerelease software can potentially impact device stability, battery life, and overall performance. Users wishing to revert to the stable version of the OS must perform a rollback, which will erase all data on the phone, making a backup imperative.
