Not Fried or Processed Food: This Is the Worst Food for Your Brain, Reveals Leading Doctor

Despite common belief, the biggest threat to brain health may not be fried snacks or sugary treats—but ultra-processed foods (UPFs), according to leading health experts.

In the UK, more than 50% of daily calorie intake now comes from ultra-processed foods, a category that includes packaged snacks, ready meals, sweetened cereals, fizzy drinks and many so-called “convenience foods.” Unlike meals prepared at home using fresh ingredients, UPFs contain little to no whole foods and are typically manufactured using industrial processes.

What Makes Ultra-Processed Foods Different?

Ultra-processed foods are often made with a combination of refined ingredients and chemical additives, such as:

Artificial sweeteners

Colourings and flavour enhancers

Preservatives and emulsifiers

High levels of sugar, salt and saturated fat

Very low fibre content

Doctors warn that this combination may negatively affect not only physical health but also brain function and mental well-being.

The Link Between UPFs and Brain Health

Regular consumption of ultra-processed foods has been linked to a range of health issues, including:

Obesity and metabolic disorders

Increased risk of certain cancers

Depression and poor mental health

Cognitive decline and impaired brain function

According to experts, the brain may be particularly vulnerable due to chronic inflammation, blood sugar spikes and nutrient deficiencies caused by diets high in UPFs.
