North Korea fires ballistic missile into sea ahead of party congress

North Korea launched a ballistic missile into the sea on Sunday (January 4, 2026), South Korea’s military said, marking the latest in a series of weapons displays ahead of the country’s upcoming ruling Workers’ Party congress.

According to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, the missile was fired from North Korea’s east coast on Sunday morning. No further technical details were immediately released.

Japan’s Defence Ministry also confirmed detecting a suspected missile launch by North Korea. There were no reports of damage or injuries.

Timing raises regional concerns

The launch comes as North Korea appears to be stepping up weapons tests to showcase advances in its defence capabilities ahead of the party congress — the first such gathering in five years. Analysts say Pyongyang may use the meeting to outline new strategic policies, including its stance toward the United States and whether it will respond to Washington’s calls to revive long-stalled nuclear talks.

The missile test also occurred just hours before South Korean President Lee Jae Myung is set to depart for China for a summit with President Xi Jinping. President Lee’s office said he plans to urge Beijing to play a “constructive role” in efforts to promote peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.

Earlier this week, North Korea reported test-firing long-range strategic cruise missiles into the sea, further heightening tensions in the region.
