Gavaskar Proposes Stricter No-Ball Penalties

Former Indian cricket captain Sunil Gavaskar has suggested implementing stringent financial penalties for bowlers who consistently bowl no-balls in Test cricket. He believes that accountability is crucial to curb the rising trend of illegal deliveries.

Gavaskar's suggestion comes in the wake of several no-balls bowled by Indian spinners during the recent Test series against Sri Lanka. Bowlers like Ravindra Jadeja and Saransh Jain were noted for their transgressions, bringing the issue back into focus.

Escalating Fines and Coach Accountability

Under Gavaskar's proposal, the fine for each no-ball would continuously double. Furthermore, the relevant bowling coach would be penalized with 50 percent of the fine levied on the bowler, holding them accountable for the issue.

Gavaskar feels that attributing responsibility is essential to curb the increasing tendency of no-balls.

Innovative Use of Fine Money: Team Dinners

In a unique suggestion for the utilisation of the collected fines, Gavaskar proposed that the funds generated from no-ball penalties could be used to fund collective team dinners after matches. This approach could transform the penalty from a negative consequence into a positive tool for fostering discipline and collective responsibility within the team.

Free Hit Proposal Rejected

Earlier, India's spin bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule had suggested implementing a free hit rule after a no-ball in Test cricket. The intention was to limit the extra opportunities batsmen receive, thereby encouraging bowlers to be more accurate.

However, Sunil Gavaskar has completely rejected this proposal, arguing that introducing free hits in Test cricket would make scoring easier for batsmen, which is not in line with the traditional nature of the game.

Existing Rules Deemed Sufficient

Gavaskar stated that the existing rules and equipment are adequate to address the problem of no-balls. He believes that the focus should be on accountability and discipline rather than altering the fundamental rules of the game.

Statistical Context of No-Balls

It is noteworthy that Ravindra Jadeja has bowled 88 no-balls in Test cricket since 2021, the highest tally for any spinner in this period. In the recent Test series against Sri Lanka, Indian spinners collectively bowled 10 no-balls, marking the third-highest number of no-balls by a spin unit in a Test match since 2021.
