Gunmen attack crowded bar in Bekkersdal township; police launch manhunt as motive remains unclear
At least nine people were killed and ten others injured after unidentified gunmen opened fire at a tavern in a township near Johannesburg early Sunday morning, in one of the latest mass shootings to jolt South Africa, a country struggling with chronic violent crime.
The attack occurred shortly before 1 a.m. at a bar in Bekkersdal, a deprived former gold-mining settlement about 40 kilometres southwest of Johannesburg, according to the South African Police Service (SAPS).
How the Attack Unfolded
Police said approximately a dozen armed suspects arrived at the scene in two vehicles—a white minibus taxi (kombi) and a silver sedan—before opening fire on people gathered both inside and outside the tavern.
In an official statement, SAPS said the assailants “shot at patrons indiscriminately” and continued firing as they fled the area. Several victims were struck in nearby streets while the gunmen made their escape.
Authorities initially reported 10 fatalities, but later revised the death toll to nine after confirming details at hospitals.
Victims Include Ride-Hailing Driver
Among those killed was a driver working for an online ride-hailing service, who was standing outside the bar at the time of the shooting, Gauteng provincial police commissioner Major General Fred Kekana told public broadcaster SABC.
The injured were rushed to nearby medical facilities, with several reported to be in serious condition.
Police Launch Manhunt
A large-scale manhunt is underway, with investigators canvassing the area for witnesses and reviewing possible CCTV footage. Police have urged anyone with information about the attackers or the vehicles used to contact authorities.
Officials told AFP that investigators have not yet established a motive, and it remains unclear whether the shooting was targeted or linked to criminal rivalry.
Second Mass Shooting This Month
The Bekkersdal killings mark the second mass shooting in South Africa this month. On December 7, gunmen attacked a hostel in Saulsville township near Pretoria, killing at least 11 people, including a three-year-old child, and injuring 14 others.
Police have previously said such attacks are often connected to illegal alcohol outlets, territorial disputes, or gang-related activity—patterns that may again be under scrutiny in the Bekkersdal case.
