Nine Dead in Sagar After Suspected Toxic Alcohol Consumption; Over 25 Referred for Treatment

Initial reports suggest the death toll could rise to between ten and twelve, a figure that will be definitively determined after administrative investigations and post-mortem reports.

The unfortunate incident occurred on Saturday night in the villages of Ghughra/Ghughar, Nauraj, Baraj, and surrounding areas within the Banda subdivision. Shortly after consuming what is alleged to be illicit liquor, affected individuals experienced a sudden deterioration in their health. Local family members rushed the ailing individuals to Banda Civil Hospital, where some were pronounced dead by doctors.

Many of the sick are reported to be in extremely critical condition, exhibiting symptoms such as cyanosis (bluish discoloration of the skin) and severe body stiffness. In response to the grave situation, the administration has initiated a special house-to-house screening campaign in the affected villages to identify and check the health of other individuals who may have consumed alcohol.

Seriously Ill Patients Referred to Sagar

Given the severity of the situation, a large number of patients from the Banda region have been referred to hospitals in Sagar district for better and specialized medical care. More than 25 such patients are currently undergoing treatment in Sagar. Health department teams are continuously monitoring the health of residents in the affected villages and have instructed that anyone showing unusual symptoms be immediately taken to a hospital.

The Collector has specifically appealed to all individuals who have consumed alcohol in the past 24 to 48 hours and are experiencing symptoms like vomiting, headache, extreme weakness, fever, or any other abnormal signs to report to the nearest health center or hospital without delay.

Joint Investigation by Police and Excise Department Underway

Upon receiving information about this horrific incident, district police and administrative officials immediately reached the spot. The Collector and Superintendent of Police are personally overseeing the situation. Joint teams from the excise department, health department, and police are fully active to uncover the truth behind this case.

The primary objective of the investigation is to determine the source of the suspected toxic alcohol, who supplied it, and what type of poisonous substance was used to cause such a large number of fatalities. Reports have also surfaced mentioning previous complaints regarding alleged counterfeit liquor of a brand named 'Bombay Whisky'.

These past complaints raise serious questions about the actions taken by the excise department to date. It is also a subject of investigation whether this tragedy could have been averted if timely and appropriate action had been taken on these prior complaints. However, before assigning any blame or determining responsibility in this entire matter, it is essential to await the findings of the official investigation report.
