Veteran Hollywood actor Nicolas Cage has voiced strong criticism of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), describing the sprawling franchise as a "well-funded and glorified WWE." The 62-year-old star lamented what he perceives as a shift away from character-driven narratives towards large-scale action sequences.

Cage's remarks were made during a conversation at Fan Expo Dallas, where he expressed initial admiration for the MCU's early storytelling. He noted how the franchise masterfully wove together different character arcs and backstories in its initial phases.

Critique of Modern MCU Storytelling

However, Cage's perspective has evolved, with the Oscar-winning actor observing a current emphasis on spectacle over substance. He specifically called out the trend of older actors donning elaborate costumes for fight sequences.

“I do say this with love; When I see these 50-plus and otherwise intelligent and remarkably gifted thespians putting on these ridiculous outfits and getting ready for the fight -- let's face it, it's all cutting to the fight -- it's hard for me not to be reminded that the MCU is becoming a well-funded and glorified WWE,”

Cage stated during the event.

Background of the Marvel Cinematic Universe

The MCU, which began with Iron Man in 2008, has grown into the highest-grossing film franchise globally, amassing over $34 billion at the box office. It successfully interconnected characters like Hulk, Thor, and Captain America before uniting them in The Avengers in 2012.

Despite its immense success, the franchise has faced growing criticism regarding the quality of its output since Avengers: Endgame in 2019. The studio is reportedly aiming for a resurgence with the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, slated for release in December.

Cage's Superherp Filmography

Nicolas Cage himself has a history with superhero roles, though he is not part of the MCU. He recently starred as the titular character in Sony's Marvel series, Spider-Noir, which was cancelled after its first season.

Previously, Cage portrayed Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider in the films Ghost Rider (2007) and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2012). The Ghost Rider character is currently being revived for the MCU, with Ryan Gosling set to star in Marvel Studios' upcoming Ghost Rider film, directed by Shawn Levy and scheduled for release on July 28, 2028.
