NHAI Removes Encroachments from National Highways on Supreme Court Orders

Nationwide Encroachment Removal Drive Underway

The National Highways Authority (NHAI), in coordination with local administration and police teams, has initiated a nationwide campaign to remove encroachments from national highways. This action is being taken in compliance with the directives of the Supreme Court.

Action on Bhind-Gwalior National Highway

As part of this campaign, operations were conducted on the Bhind-Gwalior National Highway. The NHAI team, with the assistance of the police and administration in the Mehgaon town area, identified and listed individuals and entities encroaching upon the highway in various ways.

Supreme Court Mandate for Highway Safety

This extensive campaign is being carried out under Writ Petition (Civil) No. 9/2025 issued by the Supreme Court. The court has issued several significant directives concerning the safety and removal of encroachments on national highways.

Enforcement Actions in Mehgaon

In line with these directives, NHAI is actively targeting unauthorized constructions and occupations across highways nationwide. In the Mehgaon region, shopkeepers who had extended their establishments and stored goods onto the highway were initially advised to remove their belongings. Subsequently, tires and other items placed on the highway by encroachers were confiscated.

Action Against Illegally Parked Vehicles

During the campaign, action was also taken against vehicles parked illegally along the national highway. These vehicles were issued challans and subsequently removed.

Future Actions and Warnings

NHAI has clarified that all encroachers have been identified, and notices will be issued to them shortly. If encroachments are not removed, strict statutory action will be initiated.

Official Participation and Public Appeal

Key officials involved in this operation included NHAI's Resident Engineer Kaushalendra Kumar, Consignee Ravi Kumar Dubey, Tehsildar Manoj Dhakad, Chief Municipal Officer (CMO) Mahesh Purohit, Mehgaon Police Station In-charge Ravindra Sharma, and Head Constables Satendra, Tilak, Dinesh, and Shivkumar, along with several other officers and personnel. The police and administration have appealed to the general public not to park vehicles on national highways, not to store shop goods on the highway, and not to undertake any construction work on the highway without permission.

Safety Risks Posed by Encroachments

Unauthorized structures, commercial establishments, and illegal access points along highways create visibility obstructions, narrow the carriageway, and impede traffic flow, posing serious safety risks.
