Newborn Dies, Two Injured in Fire at Chhindwara District Hospital Warmer Machine
CHHINDWARA | August 23, 2026 | A heart-wrenching incident occurred late Sunday night at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Chhindwara District Hospital in Madhya Pradesh, where a newborn tragically died after a warmer machine caught fire. Two other newborns were also burned in the accident and have been referred to Jabalpur for advanced treatment.
The hospital was thrown into chaos immediately after the incident, with an atmosphere of panic prevailing. Sources indicate that the severe incident took place around 2 AM on Sunday night when sparks suddenly began to emanate from the filament of a warmer machine being used to keep newborns warm in the NICU. The sparks quickly engulfed the machine, and the fire spread rapidly.
NICU staff acted swiftly, attempting to extinguish the fire with the help of firefighting equipment while simultaneously working to safely evacuate the newborns.
Details of the Incident and Affected Newborns
A total of three newborns were affected in this horrific accident. According to hospital administration, all were given immediate first aid. However, given the severity of their conditions, two newborns were admitted to a hospital in Jabalpur for specialized medical care.
One of the affected newborns was in extremely critical condition and required immediate surgery. Due to the unavailability of a pediatric surgeon in Chhindwara, the infant was sent to Jabalpur, but tragically, succumbed to injuries during treatment.
Dr. Kanchan Dubey, Civil Surgeon of the District Hospital, confirmed the incident, stating that the affected newborns received prompt medical assistance and were referred to Jabalpur according to their condition. She further added that the hospital administration has taken suo motu cognizance of this serious matter and initiated an investigation to ascertain the causes of the fire and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Joy of Birth Turns to Mourning
This heartbreaking incident occurred at a time when the family was celebrating joy. One of the affected newborns had been born just a few hours before the incident. The baby's parents, Shivani Verma and Aditya Verma, were experiencing the happiness of a newborn's arrival when this misfortune plunged them into deep shock. A mountain of sorrow has befallen the family.
In-depth Investigation into Fire Causes Begins
Following this accident, the hospital administration has intensified its investigation to determine the exact causes of the fire in the warmer machine. Prima facie, sparks from the filament are being cited as the cause of the fire. However, it is clear that the precise reasons for the incident will only be known after the official investigation is complete.
The scope of this investigation will also include a thorough review of the functionality of the fire-fighting equipment installed in the hospital and the overall safety arrangements. The lack of regular maintenance and inspection of medical equipment in sensitive units like NICUs has been highlighted by this extremely tragic event.
Opposition Targets Government, Demands Fire Safety Audit
The incident has also raised questions about the state's health system. Umang Singhar, Leader of the Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly, expressed deep concern over the accident and targeted the state's BJP government.
He raised serious questions on social media regarding the safety of patients in hospitals. Singhar has demanded an immediate fire safety audit in all hospitals across the state. He appealed to Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav to take concrete steps to ensure the safety of patients and newborns in hospitals, especially in sensitive units caring for newborns.
All eyes are now on the investigation report, which is expected to clarify the technical reason for the fire in the warmer machine and where the serious lapses occurred in the existing safety measures to prevent this tragic accident.
