New Sugarcane Varieties Approved, Boosting Farmer Income Hopes
Gonda, October 1, 2026 - In a significant move to boost sugarcane production and increase farmer incomes in Uttar Pradesh, a crucial meeting was held at the Sugarcane Commissioner's office. The 'Seed Sugarcane and Sugarcane Variety Approval Sub-Committee', chaired by the Sugarcane Commissioner, has approved several new sugarcane varieties for the state's agriculture.
These new varieties have been selected with the aim of increasing the average sugarcane yield and ensuring better sugar recovery for sugar mills. Decisions were based on data presented by scientists from the Uttar Pradesh Sugarcane Research Council, Shahjahanpur, and the Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research, Lucknow.
Among the early-maturing varieties, 'Co. Sh. 23232' has been identified as a strong alternative to the standard variety 'Co. 0238'. According to the presented data, the average yield of this new variety was found to be 95.56 tonnes per hectare, which is 9.44 percent higher than the current standard variety. Crucially, this variety is completely resistant to red rot disease, a major problem in sugarcane cultivation. Additionally, the stubble crop (second crop) of 'Co. Sh. 23232' also shows high productivity potential.
Promoting varieties resistant to red rot and with higher yields, the variety 'Co. Lkh. 21201', developed by the Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research, Lucknow, has also received approval for the entire state of Uttar Pradesh. This variety is recognized for its straight stem structure and high disease resistance.
Furthermore, to maintain a balance of mid and late-maturing varieties, varieties like 'Co. Sh. 19235' and 'Co. Sh. 18232' have also been released. Senior Sugarcane Development Inspector Sunil Kumar Shukla stated that bookings for these approved seeds will be made through the official portal of the Sugarcane Research Council in the future, ensuring easy availability of high-quality seeds for farmers.
Concurrently, the sub-committee has declared six old and less popular varieties as unsuitable, as they no longer hold significant importance in cultivation. These varieties will be phased out of cultivation over the next two years, shifting farmers' focus to new and more profitable varieties.
