Paleontologists in Zimbabwe have unearthed a new dinosaur species from the Late Triassic period, offering fresh insights into early dinosaur evolution.

New Dinosaur Species Unearthed in Northern Zimbabwe
Fossil scientists in northern Zimbabwe have discovered a new dinosaur species, named 'Musango matusadonaensis', dating back to the Late Triassic period, approximately 210 million years ago. This groundbreaking find, published in the Journal of Systematic Palaeontology, challenges current scientific understanding of prehistoric ecosystems in Southern Africa and the early evolution of dinosaurs.
Evolutionary Significance and New Insights
The newly identified species belongs to the 'sauropodomorph' group, from which massive, long-necked herbivores like Diplodocus and Brachiosaurus later evolved. However, unlike its colossal descendants, Musango was relatively small, measuring between 4.5 to 5 meters (approximately 15 feet) in length and weighing around 222 kilograms, comparable to a large pig. Scientists estimate it was capable of running quickly on its hind legs.
Discovery Site and Geological Context
This significant fossil was recovered in 2018 from rocks within the 'Pebbly Arkose Formation' near Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe. The new species has been named in honor of the nearby Musango Safari Camp and Matusadona National Park. This marks the fifth formally named dinosaur species discovered in Zimbabwe. The recovered remains include vertebrae, ribs, shoulder, pelvic, and limb bones.
Challenging Prevailing Theories
The discovery of Musango suggests that during the time of the Pangea supercontinent, Southern Africa was not a uniform landmass but comprised distinct regional ecosystems. The presence of different dinosaur species in neighboring areas indicates that climate and local geography played a more significant role in shaping early dinosaur diversity than previously thought.
Further Study and Future Research
Microscopic examination of Musango's fibula revealed 8 growth rings, indicating it was at least 8 years old when it died. The bone also shows signs of recovery from significant injury or infection, providing additional details about the creature's life. The absence of a skull in the preserved remains is a major limitation, preventing scientists from definitively confirming its exact diet, leaving open the question of whether it was strictly herbivorous or omnivorous.
This discovery is expected to open new avenues for research into dinosaur evolution and ancient ecosystems.
