The Supreme Court's order to close all First Information Reports (FIRs) registered across the country in connection with student protests held in July against alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG 2026 examination has handed the opposition a new political issue against the government.

Court Cites Article 142, Emphasizes Youth's Future

A bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant issued this order using its special powers under Article 142 of the Constitution. The court acknowledged that the future of the youth who participated peacefully in the protests should not be adversely affected by these cases.

Furthermore, the court has imposed an immediate stay on the registration of any new FIRs during this period. However, the Supreme Court's decision includes a crucial aspect: the court has permitted the continuation of action against 2,873 individuals with serious criminal backgrounds.
