National Education Policy 2020 Set for Major Review: Centre Plans Updates on Exams, AI Integration and Teacher Training

The Union Ministry of Education has begun a comprehensive review of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, aiming to update its framework for a rapidly changing digital and employment landscape. Senior officials confirmed that a high-level advisory group of academics, scientists, industry leaders and school boards has been formed to propose policy adjustments.

The review is expected to impact school assessments, college curricula, vocational education, and AI-based learning systems across India.

When NEP was introduced in 2020, the focus was on foundational literacy, multidisciplinary education, and modernizing school infrastructure. But the post-pandemic period transformed the education sector:

Online and hybrid learning became mainstream

AI-driven tools changed how students study

Job requirements shifted toward digital skills

School board workloads increased

College autonomy and curriculum reforms expanded

The ministry is reviewing whether board exams can move toward:
